The Welsh Springer Spaniel has been bred in Wales since the middle ages. Welsh Cockers, which were probably ancestors of Welsh Springer Spaniels, are mentioned in a number of old Welsh texts. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is probably related to the Brittany Spaniel. Welsh Springer Spaniels were recognized by the AKC in 1906.
