The Welsh Springer Spaniel has been bred in Wales since the middle ages. The Welsh Springer Spaniel was once known as the Welsh Spaniel. Welsh Cockers, which were probably ancestors of Welsh Springer Spaniels, are mentioned in a number of old Welsh texts. The Welsh Springer Spaniel is probably related to the Brittany Spaniel. Welsh Springer Spaniels were recognized by the AKC in 1906.
